DIY Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Home Office

Monday February 26, 2018

Whether you’re working remotely or have a home-based business, chances are your home office has gotten cluttered over the past several months—or even years. With spring approaching, now is the perfect time to de-clutter and refresh your workspace. Here are a few ways you can accomplish this:

Clean Your Computer/Laptop

Although desk and drawer clutter may seem like your biggest problem, in many cases, your technology can just be as dirty. To combat dust accumulation in your keyboard, run a post-it note between your keys. Fold it so the adhesive side is facing down, so you can have extra help when cleaning out any debris.

Smudges and fingerprints on your screen are another problem plaguing computers everywhere. You should invest in screen cleaner – which should last you a few months– and wipe down your screen every week to keep it in the best shape. You can also make your own screen-safe cleaning solution by mixing together eight ounces of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol and eight ounces of distilled water.

Spruce Up Your Printer

Keeping your printer running smoothly and efficiently becomes much easier with regular cleaning and maintenance. Your spring home office cleaning presents the perfect opportunity to make sure your printer is working properly, and is in the best shape possible for a long lifespan.

Before doing anything else, unplug your printer. Wipe down the exterior of the printer with a damp cloth to get rid of any dust. Open up your printer and use a soft, microfiber cloth and isopropyl alcohol solution to clean out the interior. Do not use compressed air - this will push the debris in places you will not be able to get at. Many printers also have an auto-clean setting for their print heads, so turn on that setting and wait a few minutes for it to complete.

Although cleaning your office and equipment may not be at the top of your to-do list, it’s essential in optimizing your space and technology. Not only will you feel better about the environment where you’re working, but regular maintenance will also extend the lifespan of some of your technology and other equipment.
