Why Printers Can Be Evil and How We Can Help

Wednesday November 4, 2015

“What? What does that mean?”

“Just work!! (*tap*)”

Sound familiar? Of course it does. It’s you...struggling with your printer and pleading with it to work just this once.

Don’t worry. You’re not alone.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common issues people have with printers and how we can help:

  • Hardware & Software: It seems that even during setup, right out of the box, printers can be devilish. Often, there areaccessories you must purchase separately – power cords, printing accessories, etc. – that were never made clear to you at the checkout counter. On your return trip to the store, steam may be shooting out of your ears. Once everything is running, there are the drivers to install and the software components to upgrade. Not working? Incompatible drivers? Time to try Tech Support!
  • Error Messages: “Printer not Supported.” “Cannot Connect to Printer.” “Communication Failure.” Or just “Error Message 1517.” None of these provide you with an iota of what you could do to fix the problem, just the standard “Nope, not going to work today” right when you need it the most. Can we maybe get a hint?
  • Ink Cartridges: Brand name ink cartridges today can cost more per milliliter than vintage quality champagne, specifically the famous label Dom Perignon. That is a true fact. So not only do you have to suffer the sloth of your printer, you have to pay for the pleasure! Replacement cartridges, inconsistent color ratios (stop using all the cyan!), ink expiration dates – it all just makes you want to drop your printer from an airplane.
  • Quality Per Page Ratio: According to the Wall Street Journal’s theory of “ink-onomics,” the cheaper the printer, the more you’ll pay for ink over time. Higher-end printers tend to use cartridges that print more pages, cheaper printers use ones that print less. Simple and infuriating if you are looking for quality, affordability, and longevity.
